How do I order a PRN Medication?

To order a PRN Medication for your resident, begin by selecting the resident's name.

  1. From the dashboard, click on the Resident Name you wish to prescribe the PRN medication.  You will be taken to the Medications tab for that resident.
  2. Click on the blue button Create New Chart +
  3. Click on the dropdown arrow under Select Chart Type
  4. Click on PRN Medicine 
  5. You may search by All/Brands/Generics or Custom Medications
  6. Click into the Search Medication field and begin typing the name of the medication 
  7. Search for the correct medication, narrowing the search by entering the dose unit. Then click on the medication you wish to prescribe 
  8. Click into the Start Date field. This will activate the calendar. Use the arrows right/left to move to the correct day/month. Click on the date you wish the resident to begin the medication
  9. Enter a Stop Date if required.
  10. Tab or click to move to the Dose unit field
  11. Use the dropdown arrow to make your selection e.g. Tablet/ mg/Vial
  12.  Tab to the Route field
  13.  Use the dropdown arrow (or the scroll bar) to select the Route, e.g. PO/Subcut
  14. The Maximum dose Per Administration Quantity, the 24hr Max Dose and the Maximum times per day fields must be completed
  15. Tab to the Max per Admin Qty field. Enter the quantity/ number of tablets to be administered per Administration round 
  16. In the 24hr Max Dose field, type the maximum dose 
  17. In the Max times per day field, enter the relevant number 
  18.  Enter the Prescription Quantity representing the number of tablets in the bottle/box. e.g. 100 (If a PBS/PRBS item is selected, this field will auto populate)
  19. Enter the Quantity (Tablet) per administration round 
  20. Tab to the Frequency field. Use the dropdown arrow to select the Frequency
  21. The Periodicity will default correctly
  22. Review the Daily Time & Dose Quantity which has automatically calculated based on the Frequency entered. You may update these times if required
  23. For an Insulin order, if you wish to Include a sliding scale, click the check box
  24. Then enter the Min/Max BGL Readings and enter the dose into the Amount field
  25. If you wish to add another sliding scale, click the blue + button
  26. Review the Notes/Direction field. You may update this field as required, in this example you may add above the line- reflecting the relevant PRN prescription and indication e.g., ‘‘ONE tablet, 6 hourly, PRN for Pain’. 
  27. This field is visible to the administration staff. Only add extra information below the line as above the line auto populates data based on the Admin Quantity/Freq/ Route fields.  
  28. Check the Interactions Detected (if available) before continuing on with the order
  29. Note that the tab next to the Notes/Directions tab is ‘Select Treatment Use’. This tab is used by non-medical prescribers, e.g. Podiatric Treatment Only.
  30. Under Prescription Options, select Paper prescription/No brand substitution if required.
  31.  If a Warrant Number is required for this drug, enter your warrant number into the field
  32. Scroll down to Administration options and if required, make the selections by clicking on the following buttons: 
  33. Do Not Crush/Self Administered/Unusual Dose/Unusual Quantity
  34. There are two Privacy agreement checkboxes you may check, where applicable
  35. Click the buttons next to Prescription Type, select PBS/RPBS where applicable. This button will not be available if it is a Private only prescription.
  36. The Indications and Streamline Codes window will display. Click to expand the Clinical Criteria and make the appropriate selection by using the radio button.
  37.  Click Confirm
  38. You are returned to the resident’s medication order window. If an approval code was selected it will auto populate into the Approval code box. In the instance where you need to call for approval you will be prompted to use the hyperlink on the Indications/Streamline codes page.
  39.  You are ready to complete the order. Review all details.
  40. Click the Save & Approve Chart button
  41.  You will be prompted to click the Complete button 
  42. Check to see that the medication has been added to the resident’s medication chart by scrolling up to the top of the page and selecting ‘Return to Resident Chart’.
  43. The PRN Type will display with a green button
